On World Oceans Day, we celebrate and call for conservation of marine biodiversity. The 1,000 or so islands that make up the Solomons are on the edge of the Coral Triangle, home to one of the highest diversity of marine life anywhere.

For fisheries, measurement matters

Fisheries managers and policy makers have traditionally focused on measuring the health of fish stocks and managing for their sustainability. While understanding how healthy fish stocks is important, a recent paper by Jim Anderson and colleagues offer a new suite of measurements that also consider the social and economic benefits that fisheries deliver. Including these dimensions in assessments of fishery performance will be key to making the most of our fisheries.

In rescuing the oceans, let’s not forget coastal waters

After 18 months of analysis and consultation, the Global Ocean Commission has released its report, “From Decline to Recovery: A Rescue Package for the Global Ocean”. The Commission is a high level initiative aimed at reversing degradation of the ocean and restoring it to full health and productivity. Its focus is on the high seas, the areas that lie outside the jurisdiction of individual governments.
